NME has revealed the nominations for its NME Awards 2014, which will take place on Wednesday 26th February at London’s O2 Academy, Brixton. Music fans have cast hundreds of thousands of votes across 20 categories for rock ‘n’ roll’s ceremony of the year and predictably for NME, One Direction and the The Wanted will go head to head in the worst band category.

Arctic Monkeys lead the nominations this year with an outstanding eight (Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Album, Best Track, Best Music Video, Music Moment Of The Year, Hero Of The Year for Alex Turner and Best Fan Community). Haim follow closely with six nominations (Best International Band, Best Live Band, Best Music Video, Best Band Blog or Twitter – Alana, Best Fan Community, and Hero Of The Year – Este) whilst Queens of The Stone Age, Lily Allen and Arcade Fire all have three.

Haim said: “We are so excited to be nominated for this year’s NME Awards! This will be our first time, so please be gentle….”

Biffy Clyro, Palma Violets and Arctic Monkeys will fight it out for two of the night’s biggest awards, they are up for ‘Best British Band’ and ‘Best Live act’. Foals, Disclosure and Two Door Cinema Club also receive nods for ‘Best British Band’ whilst Savages, along with Haim and Queens of The Stone Age are also up for ‘Best Live act’. This years prestigious Best Album category will be fought out between Arctic Monkeys, Queens Of The Stone Age, Peace, Kanye West, Savages and Drenge.

Miley Cyrus, Harry Styles, Robin Thicke and David Cameron will fight it out for the undesirable ‘Villain Of The Year’ award alongside Vladimir Putin and Russell Brand, this is the second year in a row that Harry Styles has been nominated. Pussy Riot, Lou Reed, Alex Turner, David Bowie, and Este Haim are all up for ‘Hero Of The Year’. Meanwhile, Russell Brand splits opinion, nominated in both the Hero Of The Year and Villain Of The Year category.

NME editor Mike Williams says: “The past 12 months of music have had everything – returning legends, era-defining singles, more albums with a claim to be modern classics than any year in recent memory and tons of massive live moments to celebrate. None of this has gone unnoticed by NME’s huge audience, with more people than ever voting to compile these incredibly exciting shortlists. I can’t wait for the ceremony at the O2 Academy Brixton on February 26 to find out who the big winners will be.”

Back at its spiritual home, and with incredible live performances soon to be announced, the NME Awards 2014 with Austin Texas are set to be the biggest and best yet.
