Taking her tongue-and-cheek humour and anecdotal lyrics on the road, Lauran Hibberd announces her ‘Bring Your Own Girlfriend’ UK dates which will see the rising indie pop star bringing her live performance to Manchester, Glasgow, North Shields, Leicester, Leeds, Southampton, Bristol, Oxford and London. The tour also takes Hibberd across Europe as she visits Paris, Hamberg, Cologne, Berlin, and Amsterdam. General sale will go live on Friday Apr 26 from 10am here. Tickets for London’s Underworld and Manchester’s Academy 3 dates are also available here.

Fresh off-the-back of her UK, US and Australian tour 2023 support runs alongside cult US alt-rockers All Time Low, Lauran Hibberd has recently announced her return to the states for her North American leg of the tour. 2024 will also see Hibberd joining impressive lineups throughout the Summer as she shares the stage with James Arthur in Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough on June 08.

The release of the indie songwriters second album ‘Girlfriend Material’ has been received with critical acclaim from key press and tastemaker titans such as UNCUT,  NME, Rolling Stone UK, DIY, Dork, NYLON, Clash, Time Out, Kerrang, Rock Sound to name a few. Hibberd has also been making her mark on broadsheets The Guardian, The Times, The Independent, Evening Standard; and establishing herself as a frequent resident on the BBC Radio 1 (Clara Amfo, Jack Saunders, Gemma Bradley, Sian Eleri, Nels Hylton) airwaves.

Released on March 22, Hibberd speaks on her latest album: “Welcome to Girlfriend Material, here you will find the 12-stage instruction manual on how to make the perfect girlfriend in under an hour. Listen more than once to ensure perfection,” Hibberd reveals. “Making this record came oddly naturally, it felt like it was supposed to come out of me and I’ve never felt so attached to a body of songs like this. I think I’m at a point in my life where I’ve started to really experience ‘life’, with going through losing a parent, having a life altering break up, living on my own for the first time, and exploring who the ‘f*vk’ I actually am. Everything I am right now is in this album. It’s the best thing I’ve ever made, and I’ve worked with some incredible people in the process. It’s definitely been the one thing that’s kept me going over the last year, and I hope it can do the same for other people. with love, Lauran Hibberd (100% girlfriend material).”

Masterfully fusing influences like Avril Lavigne, Weezer and Green Day with the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Liz Phair and Taylor Swift, Hibberd’s music is one for the masses. Speaking on ‘Girlfriend Material’, she states that it is a record that captures everything she is right now – which is undeniably candid, witty and a true force to be reckoned with. Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department and the art of melodrama

By Samuel Murray, University of Liverpool

Taylor Swift album drops have become cultural moments – whether or not you are a fan of her music. Each album in the Swift catalogue seeks to open up new themes, discussion, sounds and ideas, while retaining a sense of familiarity that doesn’t alienate fans.

Lyrically, The Tortured Poets Department is a euphoric rejection of societal expectations. It embraces all the Taylor-isms her fans have come to know and love, from her one-note melodies to her recitative delivery (sung in the rhythm of ordinary speech). And it features her signature frank and open autopsies of relationships, delivered with maturity not only in the choices of language and obscenities (“fuck you if I can’t have us”) but in Swift’s outlook on her life and relationships. This is accompanied by the rich electro-pop production of longtime collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner.

The first striking thing about the album (including its title), is the many references to poetry. The title track declares: “You’re not Dylan Thomas, I’m not Patti Smith”, pointing to other famously troubled (or “tortured”) lyrical poets.

This track sets the tone for an album where lyrics are the central feature, with Swift choosing developed imagery over catchy pop hooks. The title track is also a clear rejection of any notion that Swift is presenting herself as a bohemian, and asserts that she does not struggle for her art. In fact, she appears to mock those who do, sneering: “Who uses typewriters anyway?”

Tortured melodrama

One of the unapologetic lyrical themes of the album is Swift’s intense commitment to love, relationships and their aftermath. To help convey this, Swift uses melodrama as a narrative device. Melodrama is a genre of performance that uses heightened and often over-the-top expressions of emotion.

In Down Bad she evokes fantastic celestial imagery of “cosmic love” and being “heavenstruck”, but balances this with discovering the harsh realities of a relationship. She asks: “Did you really beam me up / In a cloud of sparkling dust
/ Just to do experiments on?”, perhaps suggesting that her passionate love is being taken advantage of.

Swift tempers this with the extreme assertion that: “If I can’t have him, I might just die”. This melodrama pervades the rest of the album to celebrate emotional vulnerability as she shares her innermost thoughts.

Emotional vulnerability is a major theme of The Tortured Poets Department. Photo: Beth Garrabrant

On I Can Do it With a Broken Heart Swift declares: “I’m so depressed, I act like it’s my birthday every day”, before proudly owning her emotion, declaring: “I cry a lot, but I am so productive, it’s an art”. Here, she claims that she can use heartbreak as a stimulus for creativity, rather than allow it to dictate her everyday life.

In his book Melodrama (1973) author, James L Smith draws on philosophical critiques and analyses of music, poetry and theatre to help define the core characteristics of the genre. “In melodrama,” he explains, “man remains undivided, free from the agony of choosing between conflicting imperatives and desires”.

Swift often exhibits this in her lyrical retellings of past relationships, either positioning listeners at the beginning (Enchanted) or end of a relationship (We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together).

Smith also asserts that “melodrama presses its own extreme conflicts to extreme conclusions”. This speaks to the extremes of emotion explored in The Tortured Poets Department, including frequent references to death. “I might just die, it would make no difference”, Swift opines on Down Bad. “Lights, camera, bitch, smile / Even when you wanna die” is how she describes her emotional state during the recent Eras Tour in I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.

Art forms like songs and poetry can be extremely valuable for artists to process and channel their emotions. Not only does this seem to hold true for The Tortured Poets Department, but the album functions as something of an invitation for listeners to process their own grief and heartbreak alongside Swift. An “alchemy” that turns for her own “tortured” nights into communal therapy.

Rat Boy Return With The New Single ‘Suburbia Calling’

0

Rat Boy’s ever-adventurous voyages across genres have taken the band, fronted by Jordan Cardy, on similarly sprawling journeys across the globe. But wherever they go, they inevitably find themselves boomeranging back to their Essex homelands. And that’s the topic that Rat Boy explore as they share their new single ‘Suburbia Calling’, their first new music in over two years.

Bringing together spiky indie-pop thrills with Jordan’s drawling semi-rapped vocals, ‘Suburbia Calling’ could be a big beat Blur, or The Streets had they emerged mid-Britpop. As we’ve come to expect, RAT BOY’s musical anarchy is the backdrop to Jordan’s distinctly British lyricism, his postcard pictures of small town culture providing equal measures of insight and humour. ‘Suburbia Calling’ is Rat Boy’s response if Essex ever needed its own national anthem. Priced out of London, you’re back in a world of commuters, curtain-twitching neighbours and Union Jacks – and you know what? It’s good to be back home. While it’s specifically about Essex, ‘Suburbia Calling’ will be relatable to anyone in the satellite towns or outer travel zones near any big city.

Jordan says, “This is a love letter to the suburbs. It made us and shaped us. It’s good to be back.”

‘Suburbia Calling’ was produced by the renowned Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths, Kaiser Chiefs). It was written by Jordan alongside the track’s co-producer Sam Preston (jxdn, Mod Sun).

When Rat Boy first emerged with his debut collection ‘THE MIXTAPE’ (which recently debuted on Spotify) he immediately earned a one to watch reputation, his genre agnostic style and biting lyricism encapsulating his generation’s experiences. But Rat Boy was only going to play by his own rules. Initially a solo project, Rat Boy evolved into a full band identity (with guitarist Harry Todd, bassist Liam Haygarth and drummer Noah Booth) with the more visceral spirit and darker themes of their debut album ‘SCUM’ nonetheless firing them into the UK Top 15.

Rat Boy’s next stop was a leftfield turn into the American punk scene, working with its pivotal figures such as Tim Armstrong (Rancid, Operation Ivy) and Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion, Epitaph Records) as well as touring with The Interrupters and earning the admiration of Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park). It was an experience that resulted in the album-length mixtape ‘Internationally Unknown’ and the follow-up ‘Government Vacation’ EP. Since then, Rat Boyhave focused on their other related projects (Lowlife’s ‘Pay Day’ album and a mixtape from Mila) and brand new music, with only sporadic live shows in 2023 with a gig as special guests to Yungblud and a hometown warm-up in Chelmsford.

Expect more news from Rat Boy soon.

Nina Nesbitt Shares New Track “Mansion” Announces Fourth Album, Mountain Music

0

Following last month’s release of “Pages” and “On The Run,” acclaimed Scottish singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Nina Nesbitt returns today with “Mansion,” a spectral, gossamer track that pleads with a close friend to see the beauty within themselves. The song will appear on Nina’s forthcoming fourth studio album, Mountain Music, which is due to be released on September 27, via her own record label—Apple Tree Records.

Speaking about the new song, Nina reveals, “I wrote it for a friend of mine after finding out how she saw herself. To me, she’s like a beautiful mansion in the middle of a dreary city. She’s covered in wisteria vines and roses. Everyone that passes her stops and stares, but she’s had her curtains drawn. She hasn’t let the light in for years. Dust has been gathering inside and things have been falling into disrepair. She’s been in the dark so long, she’s forgotten her own magic. People have treated her like a transient hallway. Temporary accommodation. A place to store their baggage. She was too afraid to let people in that no one got to see the grand ballroom or the beautiful lake view from the window in the library, full of lives lived. This song is for anyone who has struggled to realize their own worth – or had others devalue it. Sometimes you just need a friend to remind you, you are a Mansion.”

“Mansion” serves as the follow up to “Pages”, on which we hear the ache of experience as Nina sings over tenderly picked guitar and soft piano chords: “Cause I’m ‘bout two years from 30/ and life scares me more each day/ I’ve got a man that swears he loves me/ But I’m afraid that he won’t stay…”

Speaking about “Pages,” Nina explains, “Pages was the first song that I wrote for the new project. It reignited my love of folk music and storytelling. It’s an autobiographical account of my 20s. The chaos, the heartbreak, and the golden days. We recorded the track live in Devon with 5 wonderful musicians, it was my first time recording like this which was so fun.”

Alongside the release of “Pages,” Nina surprised fans with a second new track, “On The Run.”  “This song is about an escape from the mundane,” she says. “It was inspired by a lot of the US folk music I was listening to.”

“Mansion,” “Pages” and “On The Run” all feature on Nina’s fourth studio album, Mountain Music, out September 27. This is Nesbitt as fans have never heard her before. Having risen to fame at a young age with her disarming, candid pop – championed by stars including Taylor Swift and Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon – the Scottish musician is now found in an entirely new realm. It is inspired in part by the two years she spent touring the States in support of her second studio album: the critically acclaimed Top 40, The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change, which has now accrued over a billion streams.

The songs on Mountain Music are permeated with gorgeous nods to US folk and Americana. It’s made all the more extraordinary by the fact that, not long ago, Nesbitt was considering quitting music altogether.

“A lot changed as I reached my late-twenties,” Nina says. “There was a lot going on in my life that changed the way I see things. In all honesty, I quit being an artist last year.” Struggling with the demand on musicians to be “present” on social media, along with the detrimental impact that had on her songwriting, Nesbitt decided to take a step back. “I was missing the thing that set me on fire, at the same time feeling like I was just getting worse at the craft I’d worked so hard on,” she says. “So, I decided to stop moaning about it, and actually just go and write.”

And write she did. For herself as well as for other artists, including K-Pop giants IVE, in turn helping them score a No 1 in Japan with their EP Wave. Gradually, the superficial pressures of the music industry began to fall away and Nina’s creativity flourished. She moved out of London and found a new home in the countryside with her long-term partner. It was there that Mountain Music was born. The new album was produced by Peter Miles and Nesbitt, and mixed and mastered by Miles at his studio MiddleFarm in South Devon, in the UK. It will be released via her own label, Apple Tree Records, which Nina launched las month with her longtime manager, Vicky Dowdall. The name, a playful nod to her 2012 debut EP, The Apple Tree, this marks the start of an exciting new era for Nina Nesbitt, both personally and creatively.

Talking about her new body of work, Nina says, “I’m beyond excited to be releasing my new album, Mountain Music, on 27th September. To me, it feels like the most authentic and honest piece of work I’ve created so far. I was inspired by a lot of the American folk music I grew up listening to, and revisiting it made me fall back in love with writing music again. I knew I wanted to take inspiration but to also write my own story. That being, someone with a female perspective who grew up in a Scottish village and spent her turbulent twenties in London. This album celebrates that small town girl, puts an arm around the big city twenty-something and looks back at the view with me now from the calm and the quiet.
It’ll be the first release on my own record label, Apple Tree Records, which I’m delighted about.
It feels like the perfect time to take full control of my career and put my stake in the ground as the artist I’ve always dreamed of being. Mountain Music held my hand through some of my hardest moments and I hope it can hold yours too.”

Stay tuned for more news and music from Nina Nesbitt, coming soon.

Taylor Swift, the renowned singer-songwriter, has excited fans once again with the release of her eleventh studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” along with its accompanying anthology, “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology.” The album and its counterpart feature 16 and 15 tracks, respectively, with collaborations from artists like Florence & The Machine and Post Malone.

In a statement, Swift described “The Tortured Poets Department” as “an anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions, and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time – one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.” She further explained, “This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.”
